Reconstructing Alicante’s toy industry through its archives

The history of an industry is not contained in a single object. It can also be found in studies, catalogues and collections: documents that record different things and, read together, help us ask questions without turning gaps into certainties. For Alicante, the evidence available here includes a 1987 academic article on the province’s toy industry and records from institutions that preserve and present toys.

An academic entry with a date

The OpenAlex record identifies a 1987 article by María José Santos Deltell titled “La industria del juguete en la provincia de Alicante” (“The toy industry in the province of Alicante”). Its title places the research at provincial scale and connects it directly to toy manufacturing. The bibliographic record alone, however, does not reveal its arguments, methods or the businesses it discusses. The full text would be needed to describe its conclusions; attributing specific findings to it here would go beyond the evidence supplied.

Companies as objects of memory

The Valencian Toy Museum announces a presentation of a work on the history of toy companies in Ibi. Its description says the publication derives from an original catalogue that is now difficult to find and lists companies, their founding years and their founders. This points to a valuable kind of industrial-history source: not just the finished toy, but records that identify who made it and when.

The description does not itself provide the complete list or allow us to verify each entry. It is best treated as a research lead, not as a substitute for the catalogue. Its documentary promise is specific; the details of individual companies require consulting the work it mentions.

Collections and opening dates

The Museu del Joguet de Catalunya dates the opening of its museum in Figueres to 18 June 1982 and places it in the former Hotel París. This gives a specific point in the institutional history of toy preservation. It does not, on its own, show that the collection represents Alicante’s entire industry: museum, location and industrial scope are related, but not interchangeable questions.

Another source, AFEDE, describes a collection of more than 6,500 toys, mostly from the period 1870–1985. The figure and date range indicate the scope the organization assigns to the collection it discusses. They should not be presented as a comprehensive inventory of toys made in Spain or Alicante.

Context matters as much as the object

The listing for an exhibition at Málaga’s Municipal Archive presents the evolution of toys in Spain in relation to social, technical, cultural and political changes. This is an interpretive framework announced by the institution: it encourages visitors to look beyond a toy’s design or material and ask under what circumstances it was made and circulated. The listing offers no particular examples here, so that general approach cannot be turned into a detailed chronology.

What the sources let us say

Taken together, these sources offer several scales: a study focused on the province, a work assembling information about Ibi companies, museums with collection histories and dates, and an exhibition proposing links between toys and their context. They do not answer the same questions or serve the same purpose. An institutional listing describes a collection or project; an academic record identifies a publication; neither automatically replaces consultation of original objects and documents.

This combination makes it possible to outline a history of Alicante’s toy industry using different kinds of evidence, but it cannot fill in every chapter by itself. The complete texts, catalogues and objects with their provenance information would be needed to examine particular companies, manufacturing processes or changes in design. Caution does not impoverish the account: it helps distinguish what is documented from what still requires research.
