Peruvian writer, anthropologist, and public official José María Arguedas led folk-music recording work at the Ministry of Public Education from 1949 to 1952. Constrained by the fragility of acetate discs and the lack of local duplication facilities, the project sought to document traditional repertories and performers and formed one of Peru’s earliest public sound archives of this kind.
