Nintendo home console designed by Masayuki Uemura and the R&D2 team. It debuted in Japan as the Famicom in 1983 and reached North America, with a different exterior design and the NES name, from 1985. Its cartridge-based hardware, directional controller and licensing system for third-party games shaped its identity and its significance in Nintendo’s international expansion.
