An analogue sound-recording and playback format introduced by Columbia Records in the United States in 1948. Its microgrooves and lower speeds than 78-rpm records enabled longer-playing LPs; the format also includes singles and other editions, shaping listening through side length, manual disc changes and the playback characteristics of the groove.
