A new layer on an existing network

Treating the World Wide Web as a complete synonym for the Internet erases an important distinction. The available sources describe the Internet as the result of scientific and technological advances, computing languages, media theories, and digital-service companies. Within that setting, the Web was a specific layer: a way to consult remote files through texts that led to other texts.

That nuance matters when considering the “old Internet.” Before browsing became the dominant gesture, the network already carried email, file transfer, and remote access. Internet Society stresses that email was the most important network application for more than a decade. The Web did not instantly replace those uses; it offered another way to organize and travel through distributed information.

CERN, HTML, and the prototype

CCCB places a group of CERN physicists led by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990, developing HTML. The same source says that the World Wide Web prototype was built in 1991. That level of precision should be preserved: on the evidence assembled here, it is appropriate to state the language’s development in 1990 and the prototype’s construction in 1991, but not to add undocumented version histories, technical particulars, or numerical claims.

The proposal had a quality that can seem elementary today but was highly expressive at the time: one text could point to another file. A link was not merely visual decoration. It made reading into a possible journey. Rather than receiving a fixed sequence of pages, a visitor could follow associations prepared by the publisher.

Browsing before browsing was routine

The Faculty of Informatics in Barcelona notes that publication of WWW technology and browsers began to open the Internet to a wider public, including commercial activity and personal pages. This supports a description of a change in scale without romanticizing it. The Web did not immediately make the entire network simple, universal, or equal for everyone; it did help make linked information retrieval recognizable beyond strictly specialized environments.

The term browsing captures that experience. It was not only about finding a document, but about accepting that a document might suggest the next one. Links created routes, yet they did not guarantee complete, reliable, or permanent routes. That blend of guidance and disorientation belongs to the memory of the early Web: every page could be a door, and every door could lead somewhere unexpected.

The problem of finding things

An abundance of links created a new difficulty: knowing where to begin. Wikipedia’s Internet-history material states that WebCrawler was the first full-text web search engine in 1994; before it, only page titles could be searched. The difference is telling. Searching titles assumes that a page name offers enough of a clue; full-text searching broadens the possibility of locating words within content.

At the same time, MarketingDirecto dates Yahoo!’s founding to 1994 and Microsoft’s launch of Internet Explorer to the following year. These dates need not become a story of automatic replacement. Instead, they show how, within a few years, tools with distinct roles accumulated: publishing, linking, exploring, classifying, and searching.

1995 and the idea of a commercial Web

Nougir describes 1995 as a year often considered the commercialization of the Web, while acknowledging that online businesses existed before then. The wording is useful because it avoids an artificial boundary. Commercialization does not mean everything began that year, nor that academic, personal, or community practices vanished. It names a moment when the Web increasingly came to be understood as a space for services and business activity.

The opening toward personal pages and commercial activity changed both the available material and the imagined visitor. A reader was no longer only someone retrieving remote documentation: they could encounter directories, individual projects, offers, and new forms of public presence. The network infrastructure remained the underlying base; the culture of use was beginning to multiply.

From linked routes to an everyday environment

Comparison with the present should remain cautious. The evidence does not justify a straight-line account or the attribution of every current network feature to the early Web. What it does show is a basic continuity: consulting remote information through linked texts. More accessible browsers, ways of finding pages, and commercial uses were layered onto that idea.

A historical lesson also remains. The Internet was not one invention, and the Web was not a static experience. The network took shape through multiple developments, while the Web became an especially influential way to make part of that network visible and navigable. Remembering the difference helps us see current interfaces with less inevitability: behind the habitual act of clicking a link is a technical and cultural choice to turn documents into paths.

Conclusion

The World Wide Web of 1990 and 1991 should not be reduced to an imperfect preview of the present. Its documented importance lies in bringing HTML, remote consultation, and linked texts together in a concrete proposal. Browsers, search tools, and the opening toward personal pages and commercial activity later broadened its reach. In this case, the “old Internet” is not a postcard of old screens: it is the moment when reading one page began to mean being able to leave it for another.
