Before the Web, the Internet was not a single experience
Speaking about the old Internet as though it had always meant a screen full of pages erases an essential distinction: the Internet already brought together services and networks, while the World Wide Web proposed a particular way of moving through information. The CCCB’s historical overview places the development of HTML and the prototype that would be built in 1991 as the World Wide Web in 1990, by a CERN group of physicists led by Tim Berners-Lee. Its wording matters because it does not treat the Web as an automatic synonym for the Internet: it says that existing network infrastructure was used to make remote queries of files through texts linked to other files.
That distinction changes a retro perspective. It is not accurate to imagine that there was no digital communication before the Web. Internet Society recalls that email was probably the period’s most consequential innovation: it changed collaboration between people and, for more than a decade, became the most important network application. File transfer and remote login through Telnet were important applications too. The Web therefore arrived in an environment with established practices, protocols and users; it did not arrive in a technological void.
The link as a way of reading
The phrase “texts linked to other files” contains the crucial novelty. A file no longer had to remain isolated in a known list, path or machine: it could lead a reader to another file. Linking did not remove the need for someone to organise, publish or maintain information, but it made movement between documents a visible part of the experience.
It is reasonable to interpret this as encouraging less linear reading, although the supplied sources do not allow us to measure how many people adopted it or describe their everyday habits in detail. What can be verified is narrower and firmer: CERN developed HTML and a Web prototype; it used existing network infrastructure and enabled remote consultation through links. From that followed a lasting cultural distinction: the Internet could be perceived not only as separate services, but as a navigable space of connected documents.
Existing infrastructure, a new layer
The Web did not instantly replace earlier uses. Internet Society’s brief history describes a network designed for functions including file sharing, remote access, resource distribution and collaboration. It also notes that the design survived very different technological eras, from time-sharing to personal computers, client-server computing and peer-to-peer networking.
That continuity prevents two simplified stories. One claims that the Web created the Internet; the sources do not support that. The other calls it a merely visual layer with no broader consequences; that too sits poorly with the Barcelona Faculty of Informatics summary. According to it, publication of WWW technology and browsers began opening the Internet to a wider public, including commercial activities and personal pages. The Web can therefore be understood as a layer that reorganised access: it retained the network as its support, while providing a more legible entry point for people who did not necessarily use earlier services.
Finding was not yet searching as it is today
Publishing linked documents did not automatically solve the problem of locating them. The history cited by Wikipedia says that, as the Web grew, search engines and web directories appeared to locate pages. It also identifies WebCrawler in 1994 as the first fully text-searchable web search engine, unlike earlier systems that could search only page titles.
This helps distinguish two stages of digital nostalgia. One was the ability to link documents; the other was the ability to discover them efficiently without already knowing an address or relying on a recommendation. Early navigation involved both needs: following links from a starting point and finding new starting points. Directories and search engines answered a Web that was already becoming too extensive for individual memory.
We should not project the convenience of contemporary search onto 1990. The available sources document the later appearance of locating tools, but do not justify reconstructions of particular interfaces, speeds or ranking systems. The historical sequence is the important point: first a system of linked documents was formulated; as it grew, finding its contents became a distinct problem.
From technical community to a wider public
The UPC source says that WWW and browsers helped open the Internet to a wider public, including commercial activities and personal pages. This does not prove that everyone gained access in the same way, nor does it set a single date for mass adoption. It does make one broader point possible: when information can be presented as connected pages and a browser is available to travel through them, publishing can become a recognisable practice for more kinds of users and organisations.
The cultural consequence was bound to this shift from service to environment. Email retained a logic of recipients; file transfer required knowing what was sought and where it was; remote access pointed to another machine. The Web added documents that could be consulted and publicly linked within available infrastructure. It did not replace personal relationships or the institutions producing knowledge, but it made visible a form of circulation based on paths of reading.
What can be stated, and what remains outside the evidence
The evidence supports stating that HTML and the World Wide Web prototype were developed in 1990; that the prototype was built in 1991; that it used existing network infrastructure for remote queries through linked texts; and that WWW and browsers helped open the Internet to wider users and uses. It also supports placing the later need for directories and search engines, including WebCrawler in 1994.
Attractive questions remain beyond the supplied material: detailed specifications of early implementations, adoption figures, browser-release chronologies, or personal accounts of household use. Responsible editorial work should preserve that boundary. The history of the Web is vast, but not every familiar claim about it is demonstrated by the evidence at hand.
Conclusion: the Internet began to be travelled differently
The World Wide Web was not the absolute beginning of the Internet, but a change in how people entered it. On a network where email, files and remote access already mattered, linked text offered a means to connect documents and turn remote consultation into a journey. Later came tools for finding pages in a growing Web and, with browsers and personal or commercial publishing, a wider audience.
Looking back at 1990 is less useful as a search for an innocent age than as recognition of a design decision: linking information changes how it is read, discovered and imagined as a communication space. That technical gesture, built on earlier infrastructure, helps explain why being “on the Internet” eventually came to mean, for so many people, opening a page and following a link.
