A precise date for a change of scale

On 12 August 1981, IBM introduced the 5150 model, soon identified as the IBM PC. The date appears in a retrospective report by EL PAÍS, while Xataka places its release in the middle of that August. Both references locate the event in the summer of 1981, but that agreement should not be turned into a broader claim than the sources support: the 5150 was neither the first personal computer nor the only important machine of its time.

The context was already lively. The Universitat Politècnica de València’s Museum of Computing describes the 1970s as the period in which the personal-computer market emerged, grew and consolidated, placing 1977 at the beginning of a phase associated with Apple, Commodore and Tandy. Xataka likewise notes that IBM was responding to personal computers boosting companies such as Commodore, Atari, Apple and Tandy. The 5150’s historical interest, then, is not that it created personal computing from nothing, but that it changed the conditions of an existing market.

IBM enters an active market

IBM’s presence gave the segment an industrial participant of enormous weight. According to EL PAÍS, a twelve-person team led by Philip Estridge carried out the project. The article also recalls features of the user experience that are revealing today: glowing green characters on screen, an optional floppy disk drive, and advertising that promised a manual simple enough to get users working within hours.

Those details do not describe every possible configuration, nor do they replace a complete technical specification. They do place the machine as a product for work and learning rather than solely as a laboratory object. The character display, floppy-based storage and documentation shaped a daily relationship with the machine: switch it on, enter commands, save data and learn its limits. From today’s perspective this environment looks spare; in 1981 it represented a concrete way of bringing computing to organisations and users beyond large centralised systems.

The decisive issue: compatibility

The IBM PC’s impact is better understood through what happened next. Microsiervos states that firms including Compaq, Columbia Data Products, Tandy/Radio Shack and Olivetti used the same architecture, together with Microsoft’s MS-DOS, which IBM had not secured exclusively. That wording matters: “clones” should not be treated as merely physical copies. Compatibility involved architecture, software and buyers’ expectations.

IndexDesarrollo makes a similar point, explaining that IBM restricted the BIOS and that others could build a PC without using IBM’s BIOS; it presents Compaq as opening the era of clones and, later, computers assembled from parts. These are popular sources and do not allow a reconstruction of every legal or technical detail. Yet they agree on the central editorial point: the model was not enclosed within one manufacturer’s product line.

MS-DOS and the value of a shared environment

When several machines can aim to run the same software environment, a product is no longer defined only by its case. MS-DOS appears in Microsiervos’ account as part of the post-IBM expansion. This helps explain why competition among compatible systems was not just about who built a computer: it also involved which programs could run, which skills could move from one machine to another, and which peripherals a buyer could find.

This does not mean that every 1980s personal computer was the same. The available material shows a much wider landscape: Apple, Commodore, Tandy, Sinclair, Amstrad, Olivetti and other brands followed different paths. The Museo de la Informática itself lists a broad variety of makers, programs, operating systems and peripherals. The IBM PC mattered because it offered a reproducible reference within that diversity, not because it immediately erased it.

From branded machine to parts-built computer

The compatible-PC story also changes the idea of technological authorship. Instead of a closed relationship between one company and “its” computer, there are system manufacturers, software suppliers, component distributors and users comparing configurations. IndexDesarrollo links this development to the rise of parts-built computers. The cultural consequence is substantial: a PC can move from being a finished product identified with one brand to a platform selected, expanded and replaced piece by piece.

That interpretation needs proper limits. The supplied sources do not establish how many users assembled their own machines, nor do they provide an exact chronology for every national market. They also do not justify assuming that every compatible machine offered identical quality or behaviour. What is verifiable is the direction of change: after the 5150, several companies used a similar architecture, and compatibility became a commercial and historical force.

Legacy and limits

In 2006, EL PAÍS described 5150 technologies such as the floppy disk as museum material. That distance is useful because it avoids automatic nostalgia. The model’s present value does not depend on its storage or display remaining practical; it lies in showing a moment when a platform became influential through reproduction by other companies.

There is also an important limit to the label “first PC”. Xataka uses it emphatically, while other supplied sources document earlier antecedents and products, from the Programma 101 to the Kenbak-1. The most rigorous way to present the 5150 is therefore as a decisive milestone in the commercial standardisation of the compatible PC, rather than an uncontested beginning of all personal computing.

Conclusion

The IBM PC 5150 condensed a change larger than its beige case. It arrived in a market that Apple, Commodore, Tandy and others had helped activate; afterward, its architecture and the availability of MS-DOS made it easier for different manufacturers to enter a compatible space. The result was a new way to imagine the personal computer: not only as one specific machine, but as a shared platform. That is why the 5150 remains essential to reading the history of home and professional computing in the 1980s.
